Head of Contracts - Full Time - WinterthurSwitzerland

Join our Pumps Equipment division in Winterthur as Head of Contracts to build and strengthen our contract management processes.


Purpose of the job:
The purpose of this role is the management and leadership of the Business - Contracts function within Sulzer Pumps Equipment. Goal of the function is to support the project management group as well as the Procurement function during the entire lifecycle of the project in all matters related to contract management from contract baselining, engineering, manufacturing, delivery, to final contract close-out. Furthermore, you will be involved in escalated/global negotiations and commercial settlements.


In this role you will be accountable for:

  • Drive a culture of project management through effective management of risks & opportunities
  • Drive a mindset of commercial entitlement within Energy & Water business units of Sulzer Pumps Equipment.
  • Define role and responsibilities of contract management function in relation to project management, procurement and legal functions
  • Implement and roll-out global contract management processes; streamline existing processes & harmonize local processes creating and rolling out global standards across all Sulzer entities 
  • Consolidate data centrally to understand risk & exposure at business unit level
  • Mitigation and resolution of commercial risks via structured business risk & project reviews across all active contracts & projects
  • Drive project margin enhancement through variation order management opportunity management and negotiation of commercial agreements
  • Representing Sulzer’s interests in customer / supplier and internal meetings, and assisting in the preparation of presentations, negotiation of claims, and the writing and execution of settlement agreements 
  • Establishing and maintaining strong collaboration with engineering, procurement and operations, as well as the corporate Legal function on a global basis
  • Leading, training and coaching of teams on contract and claim specific knowledge in a matrix organization


To succeed in this role, you will need:

  • Degree in Business Law, Finance, Engineering or equivalent 
  • 10+ years of experience in project management or contract management in a project-driven environment
  • EPC/OEM project management experience in a leadership role
  • Native English speaker or equivalent C2 English level
  • Detailed-oriented person; ability & willingness to go into the details as needed; ability to restlessly follow-up on items & drive things to completion without supervision
  • Hands-on approach; role does not have a direct staff hence requires the selected candidate to perform analysis, collect data and build presentations in full autonomy
  • Confirmed abilities in negotiating and managing international contracts and claims, as well exposure to international customers
  • Leadership and influencing skills; the selected candidate will need to work effectively in a matrixed organization with no direct reports
  • Proven relationship management and negotiation skills, combined with high commercial acumen
  • Team player with intercultural competence and high level of network capability
  • Strong analytical thinking - ability to consolidate data and work in Microsoft Excel
  • Ability to act independently and to adapt to change
  • Flexibility and willingness to travel worldwide in order to assist project definition and execution
