This is a FLSA Salaried Exempt Position.  Compensation will be based on applicable experience, education, knowledge of industry, etc.


Job Description:

Operation Leader of the Machining and Welding Department is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of machining and welding department and assuring compliance with SEMS policies, procedures and best practices. This position reports directly to the Service Center Manager and works closely with Sales and Purchasing teams.


Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:


  1. Observe Company Safety Policy and Procedures; follow and support all SEMS Safety Policies and ISO Procedures
  2. Manages and oversees projects as assigned by the Service Center Manager in accordance with Sulzer EMS guidelines
  3. Supervises and directs Weld/Machine Department personnel to ensure quality, efficiency and timely completion of assigned projects (including administration of personnel aspects, timekeeping, vacation requests and scheduling, attendance issues, discipline issues, etc.)
  4. Provides ongoing on-the-job training of Weld/Machine Lead Man and Department personnel
  5. Responsible for developing innovative processes and procedures using the latest technologies (CMM Equipment, CAD/ CAM Software, etc) to support business growth
  6. Review and approve CAD drawings and engineering instructions
  7. Guide and direct the Lead Man to assist in managing projects, purchase orders, job orders and working with outside services
  8. Assists with technical updates within the Weld/Machine Department 
  9. Responsible for filing pertinent information such as releases, reports, issued drawings, purchase orders, emails, special instructions, material analysis, etc. 
  10. Responsible for the continued development, maintenance, and upgrading of procedures and job work instructions applicable to machinery repairs in the interest of quality and efficiency
  11. Serves as Project Manager (when assigned) on projects that involve multiple departments and/or divisions during repairs
  12. Develops detailed repair recommendations/scopes
  13. Work closely with the Weld/Machine Lead Man to ensure adequate  As-Received / Final Detailed Inspection Summaries associated with assigned projects are developed
  14. Works closely with sales group to ensure accurate hours and material cost of assigned projects 
  15. Ensure that the department has adequate tools to safely and efficiently repair welding and machining equipment
  16. Works effectively and professionally with Customer Representatives on assigned projects; including: telephone consultation, and/or communications by email or fax
  17. Ensure that Weld and Machining personnel are properly trained in all aspects of their jobs
  18. Originates and coordinates the procurement of outside services, materials, and parts with the purchasing department in an efficient manner
  19. Coordinates personnel overtime requirements with other department managers and supervisors
  20. Coordinates, communicates, and works with personnel from other departments in a professional manner




  1. Minimum 5 years of management/ supervision experience in managing operations team/s
  2. Knowledge and proven experience in electro mechanical and/ or rotating equipment repairs desired
  3. Proven leadership skills and ability to lead people
  4. Strong verbal and written communication skills
  5. Technical thinker with strong problem-solving skills
  6. Effective at thinking ahead, anticipating obstacles and taking pre-emptive action.
  7. Must be professional and have the ability to build strong customer relationships
