Environmental Safety & Health + Engineering Co-op

 

Job brief

We currently have an opportunity for a co-op student at our Burnaby Manufacturing Facility.  This opportunity will be for ideally an 8 month term, and is a unique co-op opportunity that bridges both our ESH and Engineering departments. The successful candidate will have a genuine passion for the health and safety of people, respect for our environment and a deep desire to learn and acquire knowledge and skills related to environment, safety and health.

 

Job Activities & Learning Opportunities:

 

  • Under the guidance/mentorship of the ESH Specialist, you will have the opportunity to (~ 75-80%):
    • Delve into project activities directed at specific topics, such as equipment safety, regulations & compliance, training & education
    • Provide ESH support on day-to-day operations, conduct safety walks, deliver safety trainings to employees
    • Participate in analyses of workplace incidents and help drive corrective actions
    • Touch on the audit process
       
  • Under the guidance of the Engineering Department, you will have the opportunity to (~ 20-25%):
    • Review applicable codes and standards regarding dumping of test water
    • Develop guidelines and summary reports for a future heat exchanger system, including the addition of chemicals to cooling tower water
    • Develop guidelines and summary reports for the PT (penetrant testing) booth
       
  • This is a great opportunity to learn about our site’s company-wide ESH Management System, which includes following all safety, health, and environmental policies and procedures.
     
  • An internship or co-op opportunity with our office will provide the incumbent with an opportunity to help foster a strong health and safety culture, be an enabler of business processes, interact with the various teams and individuals, and establish and maintain professional working relationships with our internal and external customers. You will be a promoter of the Sulzer Safe Behaviour Program.

Requirements

Experience and/or education in the following are considered assets:

  • Enrolled in ESH, Mechanical, Chemical, Systems, or related program.
  • WHMIS, first aid/CPR Certified and familiarity with documented Quality and ESH programs an asset
  • Working knowledge of environmental regulations
  • Creative problem-solving ability
  • Experience with Inventor 3D CAD software or similar an asset.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing drawings with a focus on design for manufacturability an asset.

Wages:  $24.50 - $25.25 / hour
